How $BuildCalc decides what to publish, where the numbers come from, and what happens when something is wrong.
What this site publishes
$BuildCalc publishes home improvement and DIY calculators: material quantities, board lengths, tile and flooring counts, paint coverage, concrete and mortar, roof pitch, and unit conversions for trade work. Alongside them we publish written guides that explain how a calculation works and when it is the wrong tool for the job.
Nothing here is written for the purpose of ranking. A guide exists because someone asked a question the calculator did not answer. If a page does not help a reader make a decision, we do not write it.
How we choose which calculators to build
- Someone is standing in a shop with a tape measure. The calculator saves a trip or prevents a wasted one.
- The answer is checkable. A builder can verify the result against the product datasheet or a known quantity.
- We show the working. A material calculation you can follow is worth more than a black-box number, especially when the purchase is expensive.
Where our numbers come from
Material-coverage figures come from published manufacturer data and trade standards, and each calculator states the waste allowance it applies. Where products differ we tell the reader to check their own datasheet rather than guessing on their behalf.
We do not invent figures. If a number cannot be sourced confidently, we either leave it out or label it explicitly as an estimate and say what the estimate depends on.
How we review
Every calculator is checked against hand-worked examples with known answers before it goes live. Formulas are derived rather than copied, so we can explain why the result is what it is. Changes to existing calculators are re-checked the same way — not only new ones.
Corrections
If a calculation or a page is wrong, we fix it and say so. Email hello@buildcalchub.com and we will confirm what was wrong and when it was corrected.
We do not remove correct information because it is unfavourable to an advertiser, and we do not change a conclusion to match a paid placement.
Advertising
$BuildCalc is supported by advertising. Advertising does not influence which calculators we build, how they calculate, or what a guide concludes. No page is written to promote a sponsor.
Independence
Editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers. We do not accept payment to alter a coverage rate, a conversion factor, or a recommendation between products. Where we mention a product type, it is because it is the common case, not because someone paid.
