About the sod calculator
Sod is living material with a short shelf life, so the estimate has to be right in both directions: too little and you leave a gap that looks wrong and dries out; too much and the surplus rolls die before you can use them. Sod is usually delivered within a day or two of harvest and should be laid the same day it arrives, which makes the quantity a decision you live with immediately. Measured area is the starting point, but shapes matter. A simple rectangle is easy, while an irregular lawn with curves, planting beds and a path is best divided into simple shapes and added up. A small allowance for cutting around edges and curves is sensible, but keep it modest — five per cent is plenty on a straightforward lawn, because sod offcuts from straight runs can often be reused elsewhere. The pallet and roll counts depend on the supplier. Sod is commonly cut into rolls or slabs covering around ten square feet, stacked on pallets covering several hundred square feet. Buying by the pallet is cheaper per square foot but ties you to a large area; a small repair is better served by a few rolls. Ask whether the price includes delivery and whether the pallet can be returned. This calculator converts your lawn area into rolls and pallets with a small waste allowance, and restates it in square yards. It assumes you have already prepared and levelled the soil, which is the part that decides whether the sod takes root. Order for a day when you can lay it immediately, and water it thoroughly as you go.
This calculator returns estimates for planning and general information only.
